Fushigi Ball: Creating Fushigi Magic

Amazing Fushigi Ball

My granddaughter called me last week and asked if I had heard of the Fushigi Ball.  When I told her “no”, she insisted that I check it out on the internet.  Coincidentally, later in the day, the Fushigi Ball commercial was on TV and I was completely amazed!

International Fushigi

This is the neatest ball I’ve ever seen, and the gravity defying tricks that can be done with it defy logic and imagination.   I really don’t think it should be classified as a toy, but kids are starting to play and use it just like they would their favorite toy.   The Fushigi Ball is becoming an international craze, and even very popular with adults, both young and old.  Apparently adults are getting into the Fushigi Ball because learning and doing tricks and maneuvers is said to be very relaxing.

The Old is New

The Fushigi Ball is not some new invention, but a modernization of the old art of Fushigi.  It’s based around the techniques of “contact juggling”, whereby the object never is out of contact with the operator.  So, instead of tossing the object into the air, it is manipulated with fingers, hands and arms to create incredible illusions.   I looked it up on YouTube, and there are a bunch of videos demonstrating techniques from beginning to advanced. The Fushigi Ball I was looking at was not as expensive as many of the others.  There were some priced around $50 or so, but, since most all are acrylic, I figured the Fushigi Ball for around $27. (including S&H) would do just fine for the novice.

Fushigi Techniques

I really don’t know how easy it would be to learn the techniques involved.  Certainly, some of the movements just look like hand and arm rotation about a fixed point to create an illusion.  In watching other demos, it’s evident that to learn to master certain of the techniques to make defying gravity and levitation seem real would take time and practice.  The Fushigi Ball comes with an instructional DVD, so I’m sure that would help.  Also, there are instructional videos on YouTube so there is plenty of instruction out there.

The Fushigi Craze

I can see why it’s easy to get hooked on the Fushigi Ball, and think it’s going to be the “next big thing” like the hacky sack.    Everyone seems to be captivated by the Fushigi gravity ball and I can see why;  the illusions are spectacular!   While it looks like you’re witnessing some magic and levitation, in reality it’s a combination of optical illusion with skilled slight of hand.  Working with and learning the contact juggling secrets of the Fushigi Ball really looks like it could be fun, entertaining and relaxing.  I think we’ll put it on our Christmas list for some of our kids.

Over the years, wood turners have devised dozens of ways to expand their repertoire. Some of these techniques involve how the blank is prepared or mounted on the lathe, rather than the turning process itself. In off-center turning, for example, standard turning skills are used; but because the piece is mounted off center, the finished product looks different from a standard spindle.

Using veneer or contrasting wood inserts provides another way of enhancing a turned piece. Popularized by wood turner Dale Nish, this technique can be used to make laminated bowls or plates.

The techniques for turning goblets,lidded boxes, and weed pots are not very different from those used to turn bowls. But in order to hollow out such vessels, you need to turn into end grain, which oresents its own challenges. End-grain turning is much like spindle turning without the tailstock. Fruitwoods like oersimmon and apple are excellent for this type of work, but any dense hardwood with fine, straight grain is suitable. Green wood also turns easily, but it will warp when it dries. To circumvent this problem, rough out the piece and then wait until it dries before turning it to its final shape. There is no need to spend much money on the wood needed for most of the projects shown in this chapter. Each can be made from small bits of leftover stockwhich might otherwise be discarded.

Goblets can Designs and sizes for these pieces vary widely. Goblets can be turned to a simple cup shape. But as you gain experience, you may wish to try turning a tulip or trumpet flower form, both popular profiles. Because these pieces often have fragile walls and stems, complete each section as you go. Once a goblet is hollowed out, for example, sand and finish the inside while there is surrounding wood to support the bowl. If you wait until the whole piece is turned, you run the risk of breaking the stem or cracking the bowl. Lastly, exotic nuts will offer a bit of variety to your turning. Must Have Home Sewing Box Essentials

As a work at home mother and grandmother, I often don’t have a lot of time to mend clothing when the need arises here in our home. When I did find the time, I often didn’t have the supplies on hand that I needed so I would end up delaying the mending of the clothing item(s) that needed to be repaired.

To solve this problem, I sat down one Saturday afternoon and went through my sewing box. I then made a list of everything that I felt I needed to have on hand to handle all of those mending emergencies. On Sunday, I headed out to our local fabric store and picked up everything on my list. Once I got back home, I sorted through everything and organized it.

The very first thing you need is a good sewing box that has organizational features. The one that I own is heavy duty plastic and inside is four lift-out trays. These trays all have removable dividers so I can customize them to suit my own needs.

Here is a list of the basic sewing items you will need to complete your sewing box.

1. Sewing Thread (Basic Colors) – white, black, brown, red, green, yellow, orange, tan
2. Needles – various lengths and tips
3. Straight Pins – one box of pins (I prefer rust-proof pins)
4. Measuring Tape
5. Scissors – I recommend a high quality pair of fabric scissors
6. Buttons – You will want to stay stocked with various colors and sizes of buttons
7. Safety Pins – I recommend various sizes in both silver tone and gold tone metals
8. Seam Ripper – Every good sewing box needs a great seam ripper tool.
9. Needle Threader – Even if you have great eye sight, a needle threader can save you precious time when you are in a hurry.
10. Iron-on Patches – I keep white, black, denim, navy, tan and brown iron-on patches in my sewing box at all times.
11. Fabric Glue – If you are in a hurry and need a quick fix, you can hem a pair of pants or fix a seam with a few dabs of fabric glue.
12. Thimble – Protect your fingertips and invest in a good thimble.

Now, if you are a seamstress, you should also keep on hand various colored zippers, zipper pulls, elastic (various widths and lengths), buckles, etc.

Once you sit down and go through your sewing supplies and organize them, you will find that you will tackle those home mending projects more quickly. Keeping a well stocked sewing box saves time and energy and your family will thank you for keeping their favorite clothing hanging in their closets instead of on your mending pile.
